The height of shear actuators is limited by shear stresses and bending, but they are often combined with longitudinal actuators in multi-axis systems. The resulting displacement occurs in the horizontal plane, creating a shear-type motion. For shear piezo actuators, the elements are polarized horizontally and the electrical field is applied orthogonally. But they differ in how the voltage is applied and the type of motion created. Shear actuators are similar to longitudinal versions, in that they consist of multiple layers of piezo elements. Longitudinal piezo actuators also have high resonant frequencies, which makes them well-suited for dynamic applications. They have a high force density-typically in the range of 30 N/mm 2-resulting in useful force in the thousands of Newtons. These actuators use the piezoelectric effect to generate linear displacements from 0.1 to 0.15 percent of the actuator length. Longitudinal actuatorsĪlso called piezo stacks, longitudinal piezo actuators are created by layering multiple piezo elements on top of each other, thus combining the effect of each element’s expansion to produce a useful movement and force. There are four main types of piezo actuators, distinguished by the arrangement of their piezo elements and by the type of movement they generate. Some actuators, however, operate on the transverse piezoelectric effect, in which motion occurs orthogonally to the electrical field. The piezoelectric effect produces motion that is parallel to the electrical field. ![]() They also generate high forces relative to their small size, giving them a significant power-to-size ratio.īecause of their conversion of electrical energy to mechanical energy, piezo devices are often referred to as motors, but the term “actuators” is used interchangeably. (Conversely, piezo materials will also generate energy when a mechanical stress is applied.) Piezo actuators harness this motion to provide very short strokes with high frequency and fast response times. ![]() Piezo materials are a special type of ceramic that expands or contracts when an electrical charge is applied, generating motion and force. ![]()

![]() Neither species ever made alarm calls when they encountered each other. Chimpanzees were even seen mimicking the classic gorilla chest beat. The study also found chimpanzee and gorilla females with young offspring also bonded with each other, as did the whole spectrum of age ranges. But both species were relaxed around one another instead of alert to attack. Mixing with another group of your own or another species can be risky. In the new study, scientists found juveniles would often seek out particular members of the other species to play, sometimes travelling long distances (over 300 metres) alone to do so. Young adult male primates tend to be more outgoing and inquisitive than other members of their troop. These two look like they’re sharing a companionable silence. The fact that these species can live peacefully in one area for decades, and be dinner for the other in another region is fascinating. So, I was surprised to hear from the new study that the two ape species sometimes form lasting unions. And between 20, researchers found that group of chimpanzees in Gabon, Central Africa, had killed young gorillas and even saw a female chimpanzee eating an infant gorilla. Chimpanzees kill members of other chimp groups who stray into their territory. Both species will defend their territories from other groups. We know many animals are fiercely territorial, including chimpanzees and gorillas. A team of scientists led by Crickette Sanz from Washington University, US, made this discovery using over 20 years of data from the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo. ![]() ![]() It is the first study of its kind to see such long-term, peaceful associations between apes. But a ground breaking recent study shows chimpanzees and gorillas form friendships, some lasting at least 20 years. It takes cues from software versioning, noting that not every change means a new draft. While this started as more of a joke between writers on social media, it’s a great middle-of-the-road way to think about drafting. Plus, for larger projects like novels, you need to divide your manuscript into parts and have a file system in place to keep track of your revisions. But you may risk losing details from earlier drafts because of the repeat saves. The advantage here lies in simplicity: you have fewer files to juggle since you’re saving to the same file over and over. Which means when saving a manuscript to a file, you wouldn’t alter the file name until you completely rewrite that chapter, section, or piece. By this definition, only full rewrites of a piece count as a true draft. Keep reading for more on how this draft spectrum works. Middle-of-the-road: The fiction patching method. It’s impossible to say: “oh, writing a novel will take five drafts.”īecause the definition of “draft” can vary so much, it’s useful to think about drafting on a spectrum: Which means every writer’s version of “the writing process” will look different. There are as many ways to define the word “draft” as there are writers. The biggest problem with breaking down the writing process from first to last draft can be linked back to one little detail: A rose by any other name: What’s in a draft? Unfortunately, you’re more likely to answer “how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie pop?” before knowing how many drafts you’ll need before publication. It’s natural to wonder: how many drafts will it take before my story is ready to publish? For write-to-publish newbies, you might want to know what you’re getting into, especially if you’re working on a large project like a novel. So you’ve decided to write a story and hope to publish it. ![]() ![]() We appreciate this laundry detergent’s concentration. Every single item holds a special symbolic significance. Other staple altar items include skulls (usually made of sugar), papel picado (colorful, intricately cut paper), and pan de muerto (a type of pan dulce or sweet bread). Families may also use marigolds to create a petal path to the altar, a way of guiding the dead as the candles are. ![]() ![]() Over Buffalo's final five regular-season games, as well as last week's wild-card game, Cook has had 67 touches to Singletary's 70. We'll include him here under the same premise - his price to score a touchdown is too long compared to Devin Singletary's (+160) and Allen's. We relied on James Cook to find the end zone in a singular wager last week, and he came through for us. The 6'5 Jones is tipping the scales at over 230 pounds, making both his size and rushing stats look a lot like Josh Allen, but without the short price to score. The Eagles allowed the second-most yards per rush to opposing quarterbacks this season despite a schedule that only featured Jones, Justin Fields, and Kyler Murray as truly dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks. However, one of those touchdowns came in Jones' lone game against Philadelphia. With an extra week for scheming, Toney should continue to play in the same role that saw Mecole Hardman - still out with a pelvic injury - score six combined rushing and receiving touchdowns in just eight games this season.ĭaniel Jones had seven total rushing touchdowns in five of his 16 starts this season, so +200 odds are about right from an implied probability standpoint. Toney scored in two of three games to close the season and was the target of the Chiefs' "Ring around the Rosy" trick play against the Raiders in Week 18. Whether that usage goes up or not, Toney's specialty might still be scoring touchdowns. However, upon his return, Toney's seen the field for at least 30% of the Chiefs' offensive snaps. Kadarius Toney joined the Chiefs midseason only to miss time with an injury after just a couple of weeks. If all four players score, you'll be diving into a silo of gold doubloons like a young Scrooge McDuck. Three players scoring should pay in the neighborhood of 4-to-1. We'll divide one betting unit into five mini-bets: four three-player parlays and one four-player parlay, each for. Using every combination of a four-player parlay is called a round robin. We'll parlay four touchdown scorers in five different parlays. With just four games, and most sportsbooks unwilling to allow more than one scorer per game in a parlay, we have to tweak the format. Nevertheless, we were pleased with what was at least a 15-unit win, and we're back by popular demand for a reworked divisional round robin. Then, on Monday night, Tom Brady couldn't, or wouldn't, find Chris Godwin for a touchdown despite 13 targets and numerous forays near the goal line. We had quite a ride last week, as our makeshift round-robin parlay saw our first four touchdown scorers find the end zone - all in the first half. ![]() ![]() That’s because Wahoo actually depends on the routing provider to give the exact turn information. They just get details that a turn is upcoming. Right now, Wahoo BOLT/ELEMNT users don’t get road-specific turn by turn directions. As they are fundamental to what should be on any bike computer over $250, since that’s the baseline set today with the older Edge 520 Plus at $279. These last two bullets are frankly the most important points out of everything here. – On-Device Elevation – This will give elevation information for routes created on the app/unit (Mid-Late June 2019) – Strava Turn by Turn Navigation – This will automatically give turn by turn guidance for Strava downloaded routes (Late May 2019) In addition, there are two features that will not be present at launch, but will arrive down the road. – Redesigned out-front mount to support larger size of units – Added new app integration with MTB Project and Singletracks for pulling routes (requires phone) – Added ‘Route to Start’ using shortest possible route back to start of ride (used when you want to be done) – Added ability to retrace a route back to the starting point – Added ability to get back to route (aka ‘Back on Track’) – Added ‘Get me started’, which gets you to the starting point of your ride (used pre-ride) – Added ambient light sensor (adjusts display settings automatically) – New color 2.7” (68.6mm) screen, flush with top of unit, not reflective Thus everything below assumes that as the baseline. So feature-wise, everything from those past units is there, and it retains the LED’s of the larger format ELEMNT (side and top). ![]() Both units share the same firmware, with the only differences being the extra LED strip and screen size. ![]() For this I’m using the existing BOLT/ELEMNT as the reference point. ![]() It’s best to start out with what’s new in the unit. I start off with the core 8 new things, and then transition to about 8 or so minutes of showing all the features in one big user interface extravaganza: Looking for the complete run-down of what’s new in the Wahoo ROAM, alongside a full hands-on walk through? Then scroll no further than the below video. If you find this review useful, and want to support this site, hit up the links at the end of the post. Once I’m done with it here in the next few days it goes back to Wahoo like everything else. First off, as usual, I was sent a media/PR loaner of the new Wahoo ROAM back in mid-March, and have been using it (and providing feedback) since. Though you know what, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself a bit. And at $379 for the ROAM, it better be fantastic. Today, people expect at the $299 price point to have routing and on-device navigation. And that’s before we even consider last week’s Edge 530 ($299), and Edge 830 ($399) units from Garmin. Garmin released their Edge 520 Plus with full routing at $279, and Sigma topped out the higher end with their ROX 12. In those two years there’s new entrants from the highly vibrant display and deep navigational features of the Hammerhead Karoo at $399. It just gave you an arrow in the general direction of your track and said ‘good luck’.Īnd to be fair, that works fine for lots of people – even including myself from time to time.īut the competition has stepped up. ![]() Additionally, it couldn’t re-route on streets if you got off-track. Meaning that you had to pre-load courses for any sorts of navigation tasks. While both the BOLT and the earlier ELEMNT did contain maps, they weren’t fully routable maps. It’s been a shade over two years since Wahoo released the black and white screen BOLT (officially known as the Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT), and in that time the product has received numerous firmware updates adding a pile of new features. Unfortunately, it’s also far deeper than that. And if there’s any overarching theme of today, it’s going to be a complete misunderstanding of that value prop. Be it deciding whether that stale bagel at Starbucks is worth the apparent premium for being convenient to where you picked up your coffee, or as complex as deciding on a new bike computer. You’re constantly balancing the value prop for a given thing you’re contemplating purchasing. Just as it is for any number of decisions you make daily any time you open your wallet. See, the thing is, when I review products – price is an important piece of the equation. And unfortunately, today is one of those days. Sometimes, I don’t quite know how to start a product review. ![]() |
